Autumn in Central Switzerland is one of the most beautiful and underrated seasons. The forests around Lake Lucerne glow in gold and red, the mountains are still free of snow and ideal for hiking, and a fine mist hangs over the lake in the morning before dissolving into mild sunshine around midday. For families with children, the autumn holidays are the perfect opportunity to discover the region without the summer crowds.
What makes autumn here so special
Temperatures in October and November are pleasantly mild, the hiking trails are quiet and the mountain railways are still running. On Pilatus, Rigi or Stanserhorn, you can enjoy panoramic views on clear days that are rare in summer. Children love the ride on the steepest cogwheel railway in the world up to Pilatus or the cable car to Stanserhorn, where the Cabrio car travels with an open upper deck.
A boat trip on Lake Lucerne is particularly atmospheric in autumn. The historic paddle steamers run until the end of October, and there is noticeably more space on board than in high summer. Combine the boat trip with an excursion to Rigi or Weggis and make a full day of it on the water and in the mountains.
For families with younger children, the paths around Rotsee, along the Reuss or through the Rontal are ideal. Flat, suitable for pushchairs and with regular places to stop for refreshments. Those looking for a bit more adventure can take one of the many family hikes around Engelberg, in the Entlebuch or at the Buergenstock.
Autumn in the garden and in nature
Our garden becomes an open-air playground in autumn. The children collect colourful leaves and enjoy the last warm days outside. Nearby, farms welcome visitors, and at the local markets you can find fresh apples, pumpkins and nuts from the region.
Goldau Nature and Animal Park and the Nature Museum in Lucerne are further destinations that are particularly exciting for nature-loving children.
When it rains
Autumn holidays and rain sometimes go together, and we are prepared for that. The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne is one of the largest and most interactive technology museums in Europe, where families can easily spend a whole day. The Aeschbach Chocolatier in Root is just a few minutes’ drive away and offers chocolate experiences where children can pour their own bar. And the apartment itself is packed with toys, books and board games for cosy afternoons indoors.
